Sportaccord announced that the 11th annual edition attracted record attendance with 2,354 delegates from 58 countries taking part in Saint Petersburg from May 26-31, 2013.
Together with international sport representatives from 107 different International Federations and 115 cities, IAKS Executive Board Member Dr. Leonid Zhestyannikov and IAKS Managing Director Klaus Meinel took part in this most important yearly networking event of the international sports community.
SportAccord Convention was once again the setting for an important announcement by the International Olympic Committee, which revealed the shortlist of candidate sports for possible inclusion in the 2020 Summer Games at the event. A special highlight of SportAccord Convention Week was a visit to the Convention by Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin on May 30.
As IAKS is an associated member of the SportAccord umbrella organization, Klaus Meinel also took part in the General Assembly of SportAccord which was place of important decisions.
The General Assembly elected Marius Vizer as the new President of SportAccord. Marius Vizer, 55, (Austria), comes from the International Judo Federation where he serves as President since 2007. Some of his achievements for the Federation include implementing initiatives such as the World Judo Tour, Judo World Ranking List, and annual World Championship.
Marius Vizer succeeds Hein Verbruggen who served as SportAccord President since 2004.
SportAccord Convention 2014 will take place in Belek, Turkey from April 6-11 next year.
Hosted by a different city every year, SportAccord Convention is a unique opportunity for international sporting leaders to engage with business, featuring a dynamic exhibition as well as the annual general meetings of governing bodies of world sport.
