200,000 spectators at the World Cup match between Brazil and Uruguay in 1950; 195,000 for a local derby between Fluminense and Flamengo in 1963; Pelé, Ghiggia, Sinatra, Pope John Paul II: names and numbers underpinning the legendary Maracanã stadium. Very few buildings in the world could match the importance and fame acquired by it in the comparatively short period of its existence. "Templo sagrado no país do futebol" – the sacred temple in the land of football, as the Brazilians call “their” Maracanã.

"sb" 3/2014: Forest of columns - Estádio Nacional de Brasília

Brasília is the only city dating from the 20th century that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its range of public buildings, the “ideal city” built between 1956 and 1960 is one of the icons of the Moderne style. In this context gmp Architects, in cooperation with schlaich bergermann and partners (sbp), produced the design of the Brasília national stadium for Castro Mello Arquitetos (São Paulo).

"sb" 3/2014: Sculptural monument - Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte

The stadium was built in 1963 -1965 to designs by Eduardo Mendes Guimarães Júnior and Caspar Garetto and – with its sculptural facade featuring expressive concrete ribs – is protected as a national historic monument. It is home to Atlético Mineiro, a club in the top tier of the Brazilian football league, and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.
